The Super Spuds are back at home on Sunday after a bruising trip to Moree last Saturday and contrasting games for the two Guyra teams.
The Spudettes began the day with a last-minute match-winning try. A defensive first half saw Guyra take a 4-nil lead into halftime after Kiarna Landsborough’s kick and chase try the only points.
Moree scored first in the second half before Taneika Dailey cut through the defence to score her first try and put Guyra 8-4 up.
The Boomerangs continued the tit for tat scoring but this time they booted the conversion to take a 10-8 lead with not long to play.
It took a kick and chase try from Dailey with less than 60 seconds on the clock to steal the 14-10 win for the Spudettes.
Dailey (3), Justine Green (2) and Landsborough (1) scored club points, while Danielle Sutton was players’ player.
The A grade was a tight tussle early but Moree eventually used its size advantage to run in two tries to lead 10-nil.
Skipper Ben Vidler got one back for Guyra, but the home side scored two more tries to lead 20-6.
Archie Dowden ensured Guyra finished the half well with his first try and it was 20-12 at halftime.
The Rangs ran in three more tries in the second half, but the Dowden brothers gave the Spuds some joy with a try each.
Archie scooted over from dummy half for his second while Guyra’s best try of the day came when Vidler chip-kicked to Blake Phillips, he passed inside to Harrison Dowden and he beat a tackle on his way to the line.
It finished 36-22 - a respectable result for a wounded and short-handed Spuds.
Angus Brazier capped his best game of the year with three club points and the players’ player award, Garth Walls ran hard all day to pick up two points and Cormack Hume scored one.
It was another big effort from the young Guyra sides, who will host Glen Innes for Sponsor’s Day on Sunday from 12 noon.
Entry is $5 and the bar and canteen will be operating.
