A Billy Youman hat-trick was the highlight on an otherwise difficult day for the Super Spuds at Glen Innes on Sunday with only 16 players making the trip north due to injuries and unavailability.
The now regular slow start once again hit Guyra’s challenge with two tries to the home side giving it a 10-nil lead.
Youman then dummied and charged over for his first, Rave Brazier finished the next try off a Youman break and Youman then added his second to give the Spuds a 16-10 lead.
Just as Guyra got on top it started handing the ball back to Glen in good field position and the Magpies responded with three tries before halftime to lead 26-16.
If that wasn’t bad enough, the Spuds gifted Glen another try straight after the break and then Robert Sisson was sent to the sin bin.
Both sides were down to 12 when Glen also lost a player and Archie Dowden used the extra space to charge over from close range to score and cut the score to 32-20.
However, Glen continued to swoop on Guyra’s errors and ran in three more tries to lead 46-20.
Youman bagged his third try but by now it was only a consolation.
Glen finished with one more and won it 52-24.
Youman was voted players’ player and took three best and fairest points, Dowden polled two points and Sisson scored one.
In the leaguetag, the Spudettes ran into a Glen side that will dominate the league this year.
There was little Guyra could do to stop the Magpies scoring and by halftime it was 40-nil.
The second half was a much better performance and Guyra even had a share of the ball, but Glen finished the job to win 60-nil.
Best and fairest for the Spudettes included Paige Vickery (3), Taylor Waters (2) and Alli Burey (1), while Vickery was also named players’ player.
This Saturday sees Warialda come to Guyra for an Anzac Day clash at the New Red Hill.
Supporters are encouraged to attend Anzac events in town and then come and support the Spuds in the afternoon.
