The Super Spuds hit the wall in their 2025 season challenge on Saturday, but the Spudettes are still kicking after a strong showing in the elimination semi-final.
Facing Narwan at a warm Warialda, the Spudettes started well and soon had first points via a try to Justine Green and conversion to Taneika Dailey.
They then had to wait until late in the half to add to the score when Kiarna Landsborough dived in under sticks for a 12-nil lead.
Narwan hit back in the shadows of halftime and then scored again straight after the break to cut the score to 12-10.
Guyra’s second wind saw Mia Cornish slide over to make it 16-10 and skipper Danielle Sutton made it back to back scores soon after when she finished a great break from Green.
At 22-10 Guyra was in good shape but Narwan hit back late and the Spudettes had to stay focused to seal a 22-14 win.
Green (3), Sutton (2) and Abby Davies (1) earnt club points while Green was also players’ player.
They will face Moree in the minor semi-final this Saturday at Uralla.
It was a very different story for the Super Spuds in A grade as Warialda made them pay dearly for early errors. The home side skipped out to a 22-nil lead as Guyra barely touched the ball in the first 20 minutes.
Ock Atkin hit back to make it 22-6 at halftime but the Spuds were behind the eight ball. The Wombats only accelerated in the second half with six tries in a row punishing the young Spuds.
Cameron Waters scored one for Guyra but the last try of the day gave Warialda a 60-12 win.
The club points went to Atkin (3), Robert Sisson (2) and Riley Campbell and Dylan Sutton (1 each) while Sisson was voted players’ player.
The result means the Spuds finish the season in fifth place despite only finishing a win behind second.
