Spuds steal a last minute win over Warialda

Fullback Ock Atkin stole the game for Guyra in the last minute

An extraordinary finish to Saturday’s A grade game gave the Super Spuds an unlikely win over reigning Group 19 premiers Warialda at the New Red Hill.
Trailing by four with a minute to play, Ock Atkin followed up some ad-lib play from Corey Torrens to run away and score to the left of the posts, leaving Wyatt Spiteri-Roberts a tricky kick in the windy conditions to steal the game.
He stepped up and slotted the kick to send the home crowd away happy 32-30 winners.
Warialda opened the scoring before a dominant middle of the first half saw Cormack Hume, Torrens and newcomer Chad Dewson score for the Spuds to establish a 14-4 lead.
The home side was on top, but gave the Wombats a sniff before halftime and they ran in two tries of their own to level it at 14-all at the break.
It was all Warialda for most of the second half as Guyra made every mistake in the book, leading to three tries to the visitors and a 14-30 scoreline.
It took a bizarre penalty tap try from Dewson, who ran straight through the sleepy Warialda line to score his second, to get Guyra back into the game.
When skipper Ben Vidler reached out from dummy half to plant it down and cut the score to 26-30 there was less than three minutes on the clock.
The winning try came from a breakdown in play, with Torrens toeing a loose ball ahead before picking it up and putting Atkin in the clear.
Atkin was players’ player and scored three club points, Dewson picked up two points in his debut and Torrens polled one point.
Earlier in the day the Spudettes were far too good for an under-staffed Wombats in the leaguetag.
Kiarna Landsborough put two tries on the board in no time, the first from a kick from Taneika Dailey that hit the goal post pad and bounced perfectly.
Abby Davies then added the third Guyra try before Dailey ran in two of her own, including a grubber kick and re-gather effort to make it 24-nil.
Warialda pulled one back before halftime, but in the second half captain-coach Danielle Sutton skipped through the defence to score another Guyra four-pointer and Davies added her second to make it 34-4.
The Wombats added a consolation but the final score was a deserved 34-8 to the Spudettes.
Dailey (3), Davies (2) and Sutton (1) took the club points, while Davies was also voted players’ player.
This Saturday the Guyra teams head up the highway to Glen Innes to face the Magpies in another tough test for both sides.
