Spuds feel the heat against Barrabra

17-year-old Hugo Brazier on the charge for the Spuds
05th May 2026

The Super Spuds almost blew a big lead before clinging to a six-point win in very hot conditions at Barraba on Sunday.
The sides traded tries in the middle of the first half with Jackson Coote pouncing on a Ben Vidler kick that hit the post for Guyra’s try.
Barraba’s hit-back gave it a 6-4 lead before Vidler and Coote combined again, this time leading to a break and a Tommy Ryan try.
Archie Dowden converted for a 10-6 lead.
The Bulldogs returned serve again to lead 12-10 at halftime but Vidler drifted across field and dummied his way through the defence to put the Spuds back in front early in the second half.
That started a dominant period for Guyra with Archie Dowden finishing the next raid and Robert Sisson finishing a great break from Rave Brazier.
When Billy Youman crashed over after a break by Bailey Wilson the Spuds had forged a 34-12 lead.
It should have been an easy finish from there but Barraba had almost all of the ball in the last 20 minutes as penalty after penalty marched them downfield and 34-12 soon became 34-28 and Guyra was on its heels.
Barraba went within a metre of scoring what could have been the levelling try but the Guyra defence did just enough and it finished 34-28.
Coote was players’ player and scored three best and fairest points.
The other points went to Sisson (2) and Youman (1) while Hugo Brazier had his best game from the bench and Rave Brazier was dangerous in open space before being sent off after the siren.
Earlier the reserve graders missed out by just two points when Barraba scored late to steal that game 22-20.
Mark Robinson scored two tries for the Spuds, while Anthony Dittman picked up one – all in the second half after Barraba took a 8-nil lead at halftime.
The club points went to Dittman (3), Brett Beard (2) and Kingi Kerr-Watene (1) while Beard was players’ player.
The leaguetag game also started with Guyra conceding a lead.
Barraba raced to 12-nil before the Spudettes slowly fought their way back into the contest.
Paige Vickery scored the first of her three tries to cut the margin to eight.
The Bulldogs went further in front before Vickery scored her second from a wild bounce at it was 18-10 at the break.
Barraba scored first in the second half before Vickery’s best of the day – a long, slicing run and try from 50m out.
Astashia Marr converted to make it 24-16 and after defending well in the dying stages that was how the score stayed.
Vickery (3), Lorissa Wilson (2) and Kayla White (1) polled club points while Vickery was also players’ player.
Guyra is back at home this Sunday against Glen Innes.
It is Mother’s Day and the club will also hold its annual Ladies’ Day with two grades in action.
