Big weekend for the opening of trout season

07th Oct 2025

The opening of trout season in Guyra saw anglers of all ages hitting the water for a series of fun and friendly competitions. The spirit of community and camaraderie was on full display.
This year’s John Wilcox Trout Classic attracted a strong field of 39 entrants, with some impressive catches recorded.
• Senior Creek Trout was taken out by Coco S, landing a cracking rainbow trout measuring 51.5cm.
• Runner-up went to Justin P with a close 50cm entry.
• Junior Creek Trout honours went to Noah B, who reeled in a lovely 33cm rainbow which also earned him the Mystery Length prize.
There were no impoundment entries this year, but plenty of enthusiasm and good-natured competition.
Gone Fishing Day, proudly sponsored by Squadron Energy, drew 99 registered participants and provided great family fun on the banks and boats alike.
Results from the Boost-a-Bass RedFin RoundUp included:
• Biggest Redfin:
o Sub-Junior: Beau M
o Junior: Kayne B
• Most Redfin from the bank: Kayne & Noah B with an impressive 35 fish
• Most Redfin on a boat: The Macraes with 3 fish
• Effort Award: Harley F
A huge thank you goes to the Guyra Anglers Club Committee, members, and supporters for their hard work and dedication. Special thanks to OzFish Unlimited Northern Tablelands Chapter for running the Kids Fishing Clinic, which helped young anglers develop their skills and love for fishing.
The event’s success was made possible through generous sponsorship and support:
• Squadron Energy – for their major sponsorship and community partnership.
• NSW DPI – whose grant provided rods, tackle bags, and lures for every child participant.
• Sissons Family Meats – for the delicious BBQ lunch.
• Guyra FourWays, Dasha’s, Khammo, Deano’s Smoked Trout, and the Guyra Bowling & Recreation Club for their continued local sponsorship.
The weekend was filled with laughter, learning, and plenty of fish tales shared among friends old and new.
The club had a great day with a beautiful sharing of fishing knowledge and camaraderie. See you all again next year!
