Perfect conditions for Vets Magic Week of Golf

07th Apr 2026

With circumstances this year preventing Uralla from fulfilling their commitment to the week of golf, Guyra were called upon to fill the gap with very limited notice. And what a stellar job they did.
Averaging around 80 players a day it went off like magic, but not without huge commitments from so many people. None more so than all those called upon to let us have their carts for four full days, including Darrin Towells who even helped us out with a few from his car yard. Thank you all.
So many people to thank that it’s impossible to name you all. Every vet, men and ladies, (and others) stepped up with everyone doing their bit. Honestly how good are our lady vets, without them on side this just wouldn’t happen - amazing. And then of course our wonderful sponsors, their input on these days is nothing short of spectacular and so appreciated. Thank you to the NSW Veterans Golf Association, the Guyra Bowling Club, Golf to the Max and Costa’s Tomatoes. Without these guys on board we would certainly struggle to make ends meet. So much appreciated.
The day started on Sunday with a 4BBB stableford and although a cool start it warmed into a beautiful day. The men’s winners of this went to Don Campbell and Len Stanley followed closely behind by another local team of Ian Taylor and Neil Paine. For the ladies it was also a local affair with Deb Heffernan and Vicki Reeves getting the win from Wendy George and Jenny Rogers. The mixed winners were visitors with Paul and Bev Nelmes taking the trophy with Guyra’s Linley Ryan teaming with Peter Taylor for the runners up.
Lots of winners for the rest of the week so I will try and condense. Monday’s stableford winner was in A grade Mark Stenning to 2nd Graeme Hunt. In B grade it was Terry Varley to Gordon Whitby. Then C grade it was Len Stanley to Steven Lloyd. Ladies A grade winner was Wendy George to Patricia McCanna. B grade winner was Alison Lumby to Heather Jenkinson. Monday gross winners, Jim Shadlow, Jim Perkins, Ed Van Daalen, Chris Van Daalen and Trudie Lawes.  Runners up Ian Taylor, David Johnstone, Philip Devlin, Kerry Bull and Kate Courtney.
Wednesday stableford winner. A grade Peter Taylor, runner up Russell Williams. B grade winner John Ainsley to Terry Varley. C grade Ed Van Daalen to Tom Crosier. Ladies A grade Jenny Rogers to Wendy Jackson, B grade Bev Nelmes to Christine Spenser. Wednesday gross winners, Russell Williams, Neil Paine, Russell Evens, Pip White and Alison Lumby. Runners up Graeme Hunt, Bob Orchard, Peter Ray, Chris Van Daalen and Cheryl Lane. Thursday we finished with an Ambrose and the winners, Steve Kent and Graeme Hunt, Linda Begg and Michael Jackson, Kay Brett and Cheryl Lane. Runners up went to Barry Altwood and Russell Evans, Kathy Courtney and Peter Taylor along with Wendy Jackson and Wendy George.
Monday and Wednesday of course was our main competition with the 36 hole event and in the men’s it went down to locals with Ray Sweeney smashing the course to come in the overall winner with Michael Jackson close behind to get runner up. For the ladies, a visiting lady, Kath Guyer got the win from our very own Shona Mulligan the runner up. Congratulations to you all.
In recent times Evans Head golf club suffered a pretty severe setback with a mishap resulting in the loss of several golf carts.  In what was an emotional presentation the Guyra vets made a substantial donation to them with the proceeds from our raffle. This was very well received from the golfers from Evans head and all Guyra vets can be very proud that their efforts will make a difference.
Our golf  course is very dry but so many compliments to our greenkeeper for having it as good as he possibly could.    Many visitors utilised many services in our town and I heard no negativity whatsoever, much praise for our Bowling Club and the cabins and a lot of positive comments from those using  Deano’s Trout farm.
All in all a very successful event, hopefully next year it will be bigger and better.
