Guyra battles hard under lights against United

06th May 2025

Under the lights and under pressure, the Guyra Men’s hockey team faced off against a sharp United Hockey Club side last Tuesday night. United struck early with two quick goals, setting the tone for a tough match.
Despite having no reserves, Guyra dug deep and held strong, showing resilience and teamwork to keep the final score to a respectable 3–0.
There were flashes of brilliance up front, with some slick link-up play creating solid chances in the opposition half—but unfortunately, the finishing touch just wasn’t there.
After a well-earned bye last Sunday, Guyra will be fresh and fired up for their next clash this Sunday at 10:30am. Expect a strong response.

Juniors take to the field
Saturday saw the start of junior hockey with Guyra nominating three teams across the under 8 and under 12 competition. All the juniors supported each other in the first round as we navigated our new teams and built on what we had practiced at training. A special mention to Anthony Bull for his help on skill development at training, and to Trevor Brown of Armidale ESC for helping the club put a second goalie kit together. It was wonderful to see the kids practice channelling a player when defending after only learning this skill last week. It shaping up to be a great season as the kids learn and have fun together.

3rd Grade women continue to grow
3rd grade women had a strong performance against Flamingoes as the team continues to improve. Jenny Atkin and Bernadette Jackson joined the side after numerous years away, and they stepped up as if they had never stopped playing. Strong defensive play by both these ladies meant the score was nil all until the last two minutes, when a 2 on 1 with the goalie resulted in a goal. Eyewear issues for the goalie (Prue Post), resulting in her taking the fuzzy vision view, may have resulted in a different outcome. She thinks contacts may be a better eyewear option next time she plays GK!!!
2nd grade women got a sleep-in when their opponent United requested a deferral from our Sunday, 9am match. No one is complaining here and look forward to our contest in coming weeks.
