31st Bowls Carnival a great success

SCHWEPPES PAIRS: Mick Pennell, Mick Shiner, Col Stanley, Les Goodchild

The annual Guyra Bowls Carnival No. 31 kicked off Tuesday December 1st with the Women’s Open Triples, this event attracted 16 teams.
After two games of 16 ends shortened from 18 ends because of the hot weather, the winners were: Mandy Hawke, Karen Moxie and Sheryl Williams (Delungra) with two wins plus 28 points. The Runners up were Elfie Brunner, Dianne Rictor and Levern Apthorpe (Armidale Ex Services) with two wins plus 15 points.
The Carnival continued Wednesday December 2nd with the Mixed Triples, this event also attracted 16 teams. Again, the hot weather played its part in having the ends of play reduced.
The winners were A. Mepham, J. Buxton and J. Mepham (Inverell Sports) with two wins plus 32 points. The runners up were Dennis Williams, Kerry Arondale (Glen Innes) and Ian Jacobs (Guyra) with two wins plus 25 points. The conciliation prize went to Ray Muggleton, Kay Scott and P McIlwain.
Thursday December 3rd and Friday December 4th saw the Schweppes Pairs played with 32 teams taking part over the two days of Bowls and 90 ends played. The Semi Finalists were Jim Thomas (Inverell Sports) and Ian Jacobs (Guyra) with five wins plus 51 points, Mick Ashford and Jason Deberg (Mona Vale) with four wins plus 56 points, Mick Shiner (Guyra) and Les Goodchild (Kootingal) with five wins plus 60 points, Mick Pennell (Armidale Ex Services) and Col Stanley (Guyra) with five wins plus 57 points.
Jim Thomas and Ian Jacobs played Mick Pennell and Col Stanley and after 7 ends Mick and Col were successful 8 to 5 shots. Mick Ashford and Jason Deberg played Mick Shiner and Les Goodchild and after 7 ends of play Mick and Les were successful 13 to 5 shots.
The Finals were played between Mick Pennell and Col Stanley and the team of Mick Shiner and Les Goodchild. After 7 ends Mick Shiner and Les Goodchild emerged the winners 7shots to 6 shots.
The Guyra 31st Annual came to an end with the playing of the Schweppes Triples. 32 teams walked onto the greens Saturday December 5th and Sunday December 6th. After 63 ends of bowls were played the 8 Quarter Finalists were determined. They were: Section 1, Scott Thorning with 3 wins plus 69 points. Section 2, Mick Pennell with 3 wins plus 47 points. Section 3, Craig O’Toole with 3 wins plus 42 points. Section 4, Luke Russell with 2 wins plus 22 points. Section 5, Chris Brodbeck with 3 wins plus 35 points. Section 6, Dan Kennedy with 3 wins plus 25 points. Section 7, Steve Clarke with 3 wins plus 48 points. Section 8, Jade Barlow with 3 wins plus 37 points. The Quarter Finals, Semi Finals and Finals were played over 7 ends.
The Final was played between Craig O’Toole and team and Mick Pennell and team. Craig’s team ran out winners 7 shots to 2 shots over 7 ends.
Winners of the Schweppes Triples 2020: Craig O’Toole, Les Goodchild and George Hemings (Kootingal) have now won this event two of the last 3 years.
Thanks must go to the Sponsors; Major Sponsor Schweppes. The other Sponsors were: Barry and Helen Presnell, Geoff and Bertha Reeves, David Wilcox, Stanley’s Fresh Bread Shop and Tooheys. Without Sponsors events like this would not be able to go ahead.
Bowlers are reminded that it is that time of the year when the Brian Vickery Ham Day will be played on Sunday December 20th.
A sheet is on the notice board if you would wish to play in this event then get your name in; it will be a box draw pairs, bowls shirts to be worn if you have one. This game will cost $10.00 per player. More information in next week’s report.
