Golf championships kick off this week

Shire Cup -Tim Murray and Darrin Towells (with trophy) and the winning Guyra team
17th Feb 2026

The first round of the local Championships begin on Saturday this weekend with the second round to be played Sunday. This will leave the final round where the top players will be seeded for each Grade to compete for the title to be played on Sunday the 15th of March.
This should see a very close championship for the 2026 season with many players hitting their peak just at the right time.
Don’t forget to at least play one round to qualify for the Matchplay Competition. The Caspers Soccer 2 person Ambrose will be played on 1st of March with some great prizes up for grabs.
Prizes are for Mens, Womens, Mixed and Juniors so grab a partner and come along and enjoy a great day. Then on the 8th of March we have the Guyra 4bbb Open proudly sponsored by Elders which usually brings a few visitors to the Club. So a very busy couple of Months on the way for Golf.
Guyra Golf hosted its Golf Presentations for season 2025on Friday night.
A large group was on hand to enjoy a great meal supplied by Sammy and his very efficient staff and to see all the major winners presented with their prizes. Then we were treated to some great music supplied by Shane Garrett.
A special thanks must go to Darrin and Suzanne Towells and the people that assisted in setting up. Darrin and Sue went above and beyond to ensure a great night was had by all.
The first Shire Cup Competition was completed on Sunday at Guyra with the local Guyra side coming away convincing winners in the Individual Matchplay format. Only one Armidale player was able to win his match and 3 games were drawn leaving Guyra very proud winners 19.5 to 11.5.
We are sure that the Armidale side will be looking for revenge next time around but for the moment the Guyra side will enjoy their time in the sun with the Guyra name being the first name etched on the perpetual shield proudly sponsored by New England Autos.
Thanks to Tim Murray for organising his Armidale teams for all the tournaments.
A big thanks to Sue and Sheree for cooking all the competitors a beautiful Breakfast. And also to Darrin Towells, Tyson Burey, Mick Jackson, Scott Mendes, Steven Wilson and all the other men who have come to the meetings and organised all the Sunday Golf. Keep up the good work.
