The Super Spuds mounted one of their biggest comebacks of the season and stole an extraordinary win over Warialda at Warialda on Saturday.
After falling behind 18-4 at halftime, with only a Blake Phillips try to show for their first 40 minutes, the Spuds were a different team in the second half.
Two tries in a few minutes from Cormack Hume got Guyra back in the contest at 18-12 as the Spuds took advantage of Warialda being down to 12 men.
Sione Tanginoa Moa charged over for the fourth Guyra try to cut the score to 18-16 with only goal kicking proving problematic for the Spuds.
A high shot gave the Spuds a chance to level the scores and Ben Vidler stepped up to kick the two-pointer with 12 minutes still to play.
Inside the last two minutes the Spuds chose to spread it on the last and caught the Wombats short out wide – Riley Campbell racing to the corner to score the try.
Vidler’s conversion ensured at least a point for the Spuds at 24-18 and, even though Warialda regathered from a short kick-off, the Spuds held on for a vital win.
Player of the match for Guyra was Taniela Kite, whose tireless and physical effort earnt him three club points and players’ player honours.
Rave Brazier made a great comeback for Guyra with two points and Vidler took home one point.
Earlier the Spudettes, with only 10 players, also pulled off a remarkable victory, led by five tries to Taneika Dailey.
She scored three in a row in the first half to give Guyra a 16-nil lead before the home side hit back to make it 16-6 at halftime.
The Wombats also scored first in the second half and it was 16-12, but Dailey’s fourth reasserted Guyra’s dominance and Charlie Ward’s try pushed the lead out to 26-12.
That broke Warialda’s back and further tries to Sophie Mitchell, after a long run from Kiarna Landsborough, and Dailey’s fifth completed a huge effort from the Spudettes.
The final score, 38-12.
Dailey was players’ player and three-point winner, Ward picked up two points and Mitchell one.
Guyra hosts Moree in two more crucial games this Sunday at the New Red Hill as both teams strive for a top four finish.
The bar and canteen will be open and the club is hoping for a big home crowd to help get Guyra over the line.
