A push is underway for a safe pedestrian crossing on Malpas Street (New England Highway), with the Guyra & Community Progress Association calling on residents, schools, businesses and community organisations to help build the case for flashing warning lights near Tenterden Street.
The campaign comes as Progress Association member Daniel Rond takes on a new role as the Armidale Regional Council Transport Advisory Committee Representative for Guyra, appointed by Northern Tablelands MP Brendan Moylan.
This appointment provides an important opportunity for local transport concerns to have a stronger voice and for issues affecting Guyra residents to be raised at the appropriate level.
One of the priorities being pursued by Guyra & Community Progress Association is the need for a safer and clearly defined pedestrian crossing on Malpas Street.
The association is calling on residents, schools, businesses, healthcare providers and community organisations to get behind the proposal and provide evidence of why a formal crossing is needed.
Malpas Street is regularly used by local traffic and heavy vehicles, with concerns that crossing the road can be difficult and potentially unsafe, particularly during busy periods.
The proposed crossing would provide a clearly defined location for pedestrians to cross and could improve visibility and awareness between motorists and pedestrians.
The issue is particularly important for school children, older residents, families and people with mobility difficulties, who may face greater challenges when crossing the road.
Guyra & Community Progress Association is seeking letters of support, photographs and personal experiences to help build a strong case for consideration by Armidale Regional Council, Transport for NSW and the Hon Brendan Moylan MP, Member for Northern Tablelands.
Community groups, schools, healthcare facilities and local businesses are encouraged to formally express their support, while residents who regularly use the area are also being asked to share their experiences in writing.
The Progress Association wants to demonstrate that this is a genuine community need and that improving pedestrian safety on Malpas Street matters to the people of Guyra
Residents are encouraged to speak with neighbours, friends and family and help raise awareness of the proposal.
The association believes a pedestrian crossing could be a relatively simple infrastructure improvement that would provide a significant benefit to the Guyra community.
With the new appointment at the transport advisory table, Guyra & Community Progress Association is encouraging the community to get behind the proposal and ensure Guyra’s voice is heard.
