The Guyra Lions Club has celebrated another successful year of service, highlighting major community projects, strong fundraising efforts and growing membership at its annual changeover dinner.
A standout achievement was the completion of the new Niche Garden at the Guyra Cemetery, delivered with assistance from Armidale Regional Council. Club members also refurbished the cemetery’s weather shelter and are now planning a smaller Niche Garden for the Black Mountain Cemetery.
The club’s annual Seniors Mystery Tour took on a different format this year after fuel shortages and limited bus availability made travel impractical. Instead, members hosted a Seniors Dinner, which was warmly received by attendees. Positive feedback has prompted the club to consider making the dinner an annual event.
Membership reached an important milestone during the year, with four new members joining, including the club’s first two female members. The additions have helped make the club more family-friendly while bringing fresh enthusiasm to fundraising and community service activities.
Fundraising remained strong, with the club raising more than $15,000 throughout the year and distributing more than $13,000 to local organisations and community projects, including the Niche Garden development.
The annual Mother’s Day Raffle was the club’s most successful fundraiser, raising $4,500 for the McGrath Foundation. Members thanked local businesses for generously donating prizes and the community for its continued support.
Looking ahead, the Guyra Lions Club plans to place an even greater emphasis on practical service projects that provide direct benefits to the local community.
The club meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 6.30pm at the Guyra Bowling Club. Anyone interested in becoming a member is welcome to attend a meeting or contact President Steve on 0404 485 585 for more information.
