Two of Guyra’s most enchanting gardens will open their gates to the public thismonth as part of the New England Garden Festival Open Gardens Trail. Gardening enthusiasts from across the region will have the chance to explore ‘Roseville’ (157 Llangothlin Rd, Guyra) and ‘Binna Burra’ (5 Elm Street, Guyra) on Friday, October 30th, ahead of the main festival weekend in Armidale.
‘Roseville’ recently welcomed a new generation of owners in Suzy Lyons and Jaime Garrick. Former owner Tony Duke has officially handed over the keys, but remains actively involved in sharing his passion.
A rich piece of local history, the Georgian-style farmhouse at Roseville was built around 1880 and is framed by historic pine trees at the front fence. Former owner Geoff Kane established the sunken garden and many mature trees around 1990 and over the past 15 years, Tony further expanded the landscape, adding two orchards featuring cherries, apples, and peaches, along with thousands of bulbs, roses, irises, dahlias, japonicas, and daphne.
“Binna Burra’, owned by Julie and Kerry Gittoes has been lovingly planted with deciduous and evergreen trees, hundreds of roses, rhododendrons, camellias, wisteria, azaleas, and English buxus, the garden delivers year-round color. Julie’s special passion for rhododendrons, box hedges, and topiaries shines through alongside eclectic rustic collectibles, dry stone walls and steps, wrought-iron sculptures, old farm machinery, gazebos, and sheds built from recycled materials, making it a true local treasure and a must-see for visitors.
Both gardens will be open on Friday, October 30th from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm as part of the Open Gardens Trail. Garden enthusiasts can also visit gardens in Tenterfield on Wednesday, October 28th, Glen Innes on Thursday, October 29th, Armidale on Saturday, October 31st and Sunday November 1st.
The New England Garden Festival takes place on Saturday, October 31st and Sunday, November 1st at the Armidale Racecourse.
ABC-TV Gardening Australia co-hosts Hannah Moloney and Jerry Coleby-Williams will headline the festival together. The celebrity duo will lead workshops, share expert advice on cool climate and dry gardens, answer visitor questions, and even tour a local garden to provide tailored, one-on-one guidance to its owner.
Run entirely by volunteers, the non-profit festival attracts up to 4,000 visitors, with every cent raised going directly toward supporting local charities. Alongside the celebrity talks, visitors can browse up to 100 stallholders offering everything from garden beds to secateurs, enjoy family entertainment, and sample delicious local produce including hot dogs and locally grown treats.
