A routine vehicle stop has led to the arrest of a 51-year-old man and the seizure of drugs and multiple firearms.
Around 9am on Tuesday, July 22nd, officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command were patrolling the New England Highway near Armidale when they stopped a ute for random roadside testing. The driver, a 51-year-old man, allegedly tested positive for methylamphetamine during a roadside drug test.
With assistance from the New England Police District, officers conducted a search of the vehicle. Police allege they discovered a quantity of a substance believed to be methylamphetamine, along with two knives and five firearms.
The man was taken to Armidale Police Station, where a further oral fluid sample was collected and sent for laboratory analysis.
Later that afternoon, around 3:15pm, officers executed a search warrant at a property on Llangothlin Road in Guyra.
During the search, police allegedly located an additional firearm with ammunition, as well as more drugs suspected to be methylamphetamine.
The man has since been charged with a series of offences, including:
• Possession of a prohibited drug
• Two counts of custody of a knife in a public place
• Two counts of acquiring a pistol while subject to a firearms prohibition order
• Six counts of possessing an unregistered firearm
The man was initially refused bail when he appeared in court on Wednesday, July 23rd. A further hearing was held at Armidale Local Court on Monday, July 28th, at which he did not apply for bail and no pleas were entered to the charges.
Magistrate Mark Richardson adjourned the matter for further mention until Friday, August 1st, at Armidale Local Court.
