The Guyra Adult Learning Association (GALA) has proudly wrapped up its first five-week work experience program, with students Kiearnna and Shearnna completing their placements last Tuesday.
The initiative, delivered in partnership with Guyra Central School, gave the students a chance to develop essential workplace and life skills through hands-on learning in a supportive local setting.
Over the course of the program, the students gained experience in communication, time management, event support, and general workplace conduct.
They contributed to a range of projects, including assisting with the production of the weekly Guyra Gazette, helping to staff the NECC table at the Careers Expo at the school, and even bringing some creative flair to GALA’s office window displays.
One of the program’s highlights was helping the students build their confidence and polish their resumes, ensuring they’re well-prepared for future opportunities.
Outreach Officer for the New England Community College Leonie Taylor said it was incredibly rewarding to watch the growth in Kiearnna and Shearnna.
“They came in a little unsure, but quickly found their feet and by the end of the program, they were leading tasks, taking initiative, and showing real pride in their work,” Leonie said. “We’re so proud of them.”
The success of the first cohort has set the tone for an ongoing program that aims to strengthen ties between the community and young people while giving students a meaningful experience of the world of work.
With the next round of students starting shortly, GALA is looking forward to continuing the momentum and offering more young people the chance to learn, grow and contribute in a real-world setting.
“This is just the beginning,” Leonie added. “Programs like this are vital for helping our youth thrive and stay connected to their local community.”
