Search on for local artist to create mural

Armidale Regional Council is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOIs) from groups or individuals living in the Guyra area who would be interested in assisting a local artist in developing a mural design for the toilet block in Bradley Street. At last month’s Council meeting it was resolved the original artist would not paint the mural due to strong community backlash.
Armidale Regional Council General Manager James Roncon said Council is ensuring the Guyra community are given a piece of public art they can enjoy and appreciate.
“We have listened to the concerns the Guyra community had, so we are going back to the drawing board to make sure we deliver residents with a mural they want to see in their main street,” said Mr Roncon.
“By including residents in the process, we are ensuring a mural will be delivered that suits the tastes and needs of the Guyra community.”
Community groups or individuals are required to collaborate with a local artist when submitting their EOI, and ideas must reflect the local themes and identity of the Guyra community and is designed to enhance the ambience of the main street.
“Through engaging a local artist, the artwork will capture the true essence of the community and will cement Guyra’s identity,” said Mr Roncon.
The new artist and community group or individual must be prepared to have the project fully completed before June 30 in order to meet the funding requirement. If the project is not complete by that date, the funding will be returned.
