Hands-on agricultural experience

05th Mar 2026

On Monday February 16th, students at Guyra Central School (GCS) welcomed Angus Dawson from Arakoon Performance Genetics to the school farm for a special lamb judging incursion. The visit gave students a valuable opportunity to develop their practical skills in sheep assessment and livestock management, vital areas of knowledge for those interested in agriculture.
Throughout the day, Angus guided students through the process of mouthing sheep to accurately estimate their age, a key technique in animal husbandry. Students also learnt how to evaluate ewes for reproductive and structural soundness, gaining insights into the traits that contribute to a healthy and productive flock.
The highlight of the incursion was the hands-on task of weighing and drafting a pen of lambs. Under Angus’s expert supervision, students carefully selected their Pen of 3 entry for the Prime Lamb Hoof and Hook competition at the 2025 Guyra Show. This experience not only reinforced the students’ practical skills but also fostered teamwork and decision-making as they worked collaboratively to make informed choices about their entries.
GCS is proud of the students’ efforts and achievements at the Guyra Show and grateful to Angus Dawson for generously sharing his time and expertise. His visit supported the school’s commitment to providing authentic agricultural learning experiences that prepare students for future opportunities in the industry.
