Dot’s lifetime of service recognised

A pillar of the Guyra Neighbourhood Centre was honoured last week, as Dorothy “Dot” Vickery OAM was celebrated for more than two decades of dedicated service.
Friends, colleagues and community members gathered on Thursday, April 23rd to recognise Dot’s extraordinary contribution, particularly her long-standing involvement with the Centre, where she recently stepped down as Treasurer of the Board after more than 20 years of service.
The celebration, kept a closely guarded secret, saw ARC Mayor Sam Coupland present Dot with a plaque honouring her Lifetime Membership to the Centre. Alongside GNC Manager Sarah Hunt and Chairperson Madan Narayanamurthy, Mayor Coupland acknowledged Dot’s
tireless work, unwavering commitment and deep care for the Guyra community.
“I am so thankful for the support Dot gave to me when I began working here at the Centre, and ever since. It has been invaluable,” Ms Hunt said. “We wouldn’t have a neighbourhood centre without Dot.”
Long-time friend Bev Mitchell also spoke warmly, reflecting on a lifetime of friendship and Dot’s enduring community spirit.
Dot was presented with a rhododendron from staff, and guests shared a morning tea to mark the occasion.
“This came as a total shock to me,” Dot said. “But I am absolutely deeply honoured. Thank you.”
Dot’s contribution to the Neighbourhood Centre is just one chapter in a lifetime of service. In 2018, she was named Guyra Citizen of the Year at the Australia Day Awards, recognised as tireless, hardworking and a passionate advocate for her town.
In 2020, Dot’s service was formally recognised when she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia as part of the Australia Day Honours.
Despite stepping back from her formal role with the Neighbourhood Centre, Dot’s impact will continue to be felt across the Guyra district.
