Local woolgowers take out top award at Royal Easter Show

Guyra woolgrowers James and Janelle Stewart won have taken home three major awards at the 2024 Sydney Royal Easter Show.
James is a fourth generation woolgrower, with the Stewart family breeding merino sheep on the family property “Moray’, west of Guyra for close to 150 years. They operate a merino stud and a commercial flock of around 3500 sheep.
The fleeces they entered in this years’ Show were awarded ten first places, six second places, five third places and four fourth places.
Due to their overall success, they won the Thomas Farquhar Hodgson Memorial Perpetual Trophy for the most successful Merino Fleece Exhibitor overall.
Other major awards for 2024 were the Australian Council of Wool Exporters Perpetual Prize for the Best Collection of three Spinners type Merino ewe or wether fleeces (unrugged) and the Cliff Friend Perpetual Award for the most successful Exhibitor in the Unhoused and Unrugged Fleece Classes.
They have been exhibiting Merino fleeces at Sydney Royal for around 8 years, and have had success in previous years including 2023 where they won the Grand Champion Merino Fleece and in 2022 winning Most Successful Exhibitor in the Unhoused and Unrugged Merino Classes for the first time.
