Funding to boost native fish stocks across the region

Anglers at Guyra, Moree, Deepwater and Inverell will benefit from funding to help build native fish populations in local waterways through the Community Native Fish Stocking (CNFS) Grants Program.
Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan welcomed last week’s funding announcement, which provides $2 for every $1 contributed by participating clubs.
The funding will allow successful applicants to purchase native fish, including Australian Bass, Murray Cod and Golden Perch, for release into publicly accessible rivers and dams across the region.
Successful applicants include:
• Guyra Anglers Club – $4,000
• Deepwater Freshwater
Fishing Club – $6,000
• Inverell RSM Fishing
Club – $12,000
• Hardman Outdoor Restock,
Moree – $12,000
“Fishing is one of the most popular sports in Australia and is one of the few recreational activities that can be enjoyed across all ages and abilities,” Mr Moylan said.
“The clubs and enthusiasts that work to maintain healthy fish stocks through this program are to be commended for their efforts in ensuring a healthy native fish population.”
Mr Moylan also acknowledged the support the program provides to accredited regional commercial fish hatcheries, from which the fingerling fish must be purchased.
“I’m sure anglers of the local public waterways where these young native fish will be released will be looking forward to happy fishing in the years to come,” he said.
The program is administered by NSW Fisheries and Forestry using funding from the NSW Recreational Fishing Licence program. More than 400,000 licences are issued each year, with revenue directed towards enhancing recreational fishing across NSW.
