The spirit of giving was on full display during National Volunteer Week, Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering, held from 19th to 25th May 2025.
A highlight of the week was the New England Regional Volunteer Awards, presented during a special morning tea at the Armidale Regional Council Chambers on Wednesday May 21st.
Armidale Regional Councillor Paul Gaddes and Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan MP presented certificates to all nominees and honoured the region’s top volunteers.
“Volunteers make our community stronger. While they don’t do it for recognition, we thank them whenever we can,” said Cr Gaddes.
“Their generosity improves lives and builds a better region for all.”
Guyra volunteers were unable to attend the ceremony due to the road conditions. Guyra Home Supportd Services (HSS) Nicholii House Team were nominated in the Volunteer Team category and Guyra HSS Volunteer Transport Team werealso nominated in the Volunteer Team category for their work with Guyra Home Support Service.
The 2025 award winners included:
• Volunteer Team of the Year: Armidale Hospital Kiosk, recognised for their work with the United Hospitals Auxiliary.
• Senior Volunteer of the Year (65+): Henry Raymond, honoured for two decades of service with Armidale/Uralla Meals on Wheels.
• Adult Volunteer of the Year: Donna Green, celebrated for her support of the TAFE NSW Adult Migrant English Program.

The top honour, New England Regional Volunteer of the Year, was awarded to Henry Raymond. Starting as a driver after retirement 20 years ago, Henry has delivered thousands of meals and brightened countless lives.
“His visits provide more than just a meal—they offer conversation, kindness and connection,” said Cr Gaddes.
Brendan Moylan MP echoed these sentiments, praising volunteers across the Northern Tablelands.
“Without our volunteers, many organisations, charities, and community events wouldn’t function,” he said. “They are the backbone of our communities.”
All regional nominees have been forwarded to the NSW Volunteer of the Year Award 2025, run by The Centre for Volunteering.
