On the job training with the Gazette

Big Picture student Zander Lloyd working on the Guyra Gazette
20th May 2025

My name is Zander Lloyd and I’m a year nine Big Picture student at Guyra Central School. At the moment I’m doing my LTI (Learning through Internship) at Guyra Gazette and I’m working with Janelle Stewart every Monday for a term.
What am I interested in? I’m interested in history, drawing, photography, video games and basketball.
Big Picture what is it? Well if you don’t know what Big Picture (BP) is I’ll tell you about it. Big Picture is different to mainstream learning because each BP student gets to pick their project. For example my project this term is learning how to draw digitally and creating my own graphic novel from scratch.
At the end of each term each BP student has to present their work to their advisors, parents and any guests the student invites. In Big Picture we call the presentation an exhibition. That’s a short Explanation of what Big Picture is.
I’ve been in Big Picture since year seven so I’ve done a lot projects so far such as learning about Norse and Greek mythology, learning how sound works in video games, learning about Japanese history, specifically Oda Nobunaga’s Story and the Battles he took part in, and learning how to draw from scratch.
Why am I doing an LTI at the Gazette? The reason I am doing an LTI at the Gazette is for work experience to put on my resume, to learn how it is produced and to develop new skills that will help me down the track.
What do I want to learn from my LTI? I want to learn how to take better pictures, to learn how to write better articles and gain experience with all the software they use.
