Eight secondary students from Guyra Central School have participated in a pilot shearing program for beginner shearers. The program was hosted by Armidale TAFE with students traveling by bus to a local shed for five full days.
The students learnt all aspects of working in a shearing shed as part of a team. All of the students made excellent progress with their shearing and crutching skills.
Guyra Central School Year 11 student Hayden Wallace received an Australian Wool Innovations (AWI) beginner shearer start up pack worth over $2000.  Hayden is completing a School Based Traineeship and received the pack for his ongoing commitment and excellence in developing his shearing skills.
Agriculture teacher Rebecca Smith said that this is wonderful recognition for Hayden’s hard work.
“Many thanks must go to the fantastic instructors Leo Fitter, Ross Thompson and David Lockrey for a fantastic week of learning for Guyra Central School students,” Mrs Smith said. “Thanks also to Gwyn Pearson who attended each day, David Richardson and Angus Hill for attending part of the week with our students.”
