Call for Nominations: Japan-Australia Grassroots Exchange Program 2026

01st Jul 2025

RSL Australia is inviting nominations for the 2026 Japan-Australia Grassroots Exchange Program, a unique opportunity for descendants of Australian Prisoners of War (POWs) to visit Japan and participate in a meaningful cultural exchange.
Now in its third decade, the program—originally launched in 1994 as the Hand of Friendship project—aims to promote reconciliation and deepen mutual understanding between Japan and Australia. Two selected participants will travel to Japan for eight days in February or March 2026, with the Japanese Government covering most travel and accommodation expenses.
The itinerary includes official meetings with Japanese government representatives, a visit to the Commonwealth War Cemetery, cultural tours, and a formal dinner hosted by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Eligible applicants must be direct descendants of Australian POWs. To apply, individuals must email support@rslnsw.org.au by 5:00pm AEST on Friday 25 July 2025, including a completed nomination form, a passport-sized photo, and supporting documentation detailing their POW connection, personal background, and interest in the program.
