Plans revealed for final Guyra Main Street upgrade

Guyra residents and businesses are being invited to have their say on plans for the final stage of the long-awaited Bradley Street Main Street upgrade, with construction expected to begin in mid-2027.
Armidale Regional Council is preparing to complete the section of Bradley Street between Mackenzie Street and Ollera Street, bringing the broader Guyra Main Street project to completion.
The approximately six-month project will include new footpaths, kerb and guttering, underground stormwater and water main infrastructure, additional tree planting and new underground conduits to support future street lighting and further beautification works.
The plans also include a number of improvements to the streetscape, including increasing the number of seats from nine to 19 and bins from seven to 13.
Additional trees, including Lollipop Maple and Crimson Sentry varieties, are proposed, along with a new footpath connection and trees linking Bradley Street across the vacant block opposite Mackenzie Street.
A new bus shelter and information shelter are proposed for Volunteer Park, while a new garden bed at the Ollera Street end of Bradley Street is intended to provide a more attractive entry to the town’s main street.
Council expects construction to commence by mid-2027 and be completed by the end of the year.
Mayor Sam Coupland said the final stage represented an important investment in Guyra’s future.
“This project delivers a long-standing commitment to the Guyra community and will provide lasting benefits for residents, businesses and visitors alike,” he said.
“By renewing essential underground infrastructure while improving the look, safety and functionality of Bradley Street, we’re helping ensure Guyra’s main street remains a welcoming and vibrant place for years to come.”
The previous stage of the project encountered significant delays and additional costs after underground fuel tanks were discovered beneath sections of the footpath.
Several tanks had to be removed and the affected areas remediated, contributing to the decision not to complete the entire Main Street project at that time.
Council has since undertaken extensive investigations, including ground-penetrating radar surveys and targeted drilling, to identify any further underground fuel tanks within the remaining project area.
To date, Council says there is no evidence of additional tanks.
Council is now seeking community feedback on the plans before construction begins.
“We want people to take the opportunity to review plans for this final section of the Guyra Main Street upgrade project and let us know their thoughts,” Cr Coupland said.
“Community input helps us identify any concerns early and ensure we deliver the best possible outcome for everyone who uses Bradley Street.”
Some temporary disruption to parking and pedestrian access is expected along Bradley Street and adjoining streets during construction. Council says it will work with local businesses to minimise the impact wherever possible.
