A special gathering was held at St Columba’s Presbyterian Church on Sunday, March 15th to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the laying of the church’s foundation stone.
The regular congregation was joined by people from other denominations, a wide cross-section of the community and many with long-standing connections to the church, including families linked to its early days in Wandsworth, Ben Lomond and Guyra. Others attended after hearing the general invitation through the local press, ABC Radio’s Australia All Over, and by word of mouth.
The Reverend Fred Monkton led a commemorative service at the Church, to acknowledge the 100 year anniversary and to challenge us bringing the Christian faith forward into the future. The foundation stone acknowledges Mrs Marjory Jackson, and members of her family line were present for the occasion.
Scripture readings were given by Mrs Beth White, Mr David Brown and Mr Michael Gresham, while Mrs Anne Campbell led the congregation in the hymns In Christ Alone, Nothing But the Blood of Jesus and Praise Him.
Ms Dorothy Lockyer presented an overview of the church’s long history, and guests were invited to view photographs of past caretakers and custodians of the faith displayed in large frames in the vestry. Visitors also had the opportunity to inspect commemorative plaques on the church furniture and tributes contained in the stained-glass windows. Additional items of interest relating to the church are on display at the Guyra and District Historical Society Museum.
Following the service, everyone was invited to McKie Hall for a generous morning tea, where Mrs Judy Jackson was invited to cut the celebratory cake.
The gathering provided an opportunity for old acquaintances to reconnect, stories to be shared and gratitude expressed for those whose dedication not only saw the church built but sustained worship within its walls over the past century.
