The Guyra Branch of Can Assist recently held its Annual General Meeting, highlighting another successful year of dedicated support for local cancer patients and families.
The meeting marked a significant moment of transition, as long-serving members Sue Adams and Lyn Skinner officially retired from their roles after decades of tireless service.
Sue Adams served as Secretary and Client Liaison Officer, while Lyn Skinner held the position of Treasurer. Both women were recognised for their exceptional commitment to the branch and their pivotal roles in supporting local patients over the years.
Stepping into their shoes are Leonie Cox as Secretary, Jenni Jackson as Treasurer, and Leanne Burey as the new Client Liaison Officer.
President Wendy Jackson acknowledged the contributions of both outgoing and incoming members.
“Most people take on roles in community groups thinking they’ll do their bit for a couple of years, but both Sue and Lyn have been outstanding in their roles over a couple of decades,” Wendy said. “Their dedication has made a lasting difference.”
In addition to the AGM, several committee members recently attended the Can Assist Regional Meeting in Tamworth. Representatives from branches across northern NSW shared insights and updates in what was described as an informative and collaborative event.
This year, Can Assist is proudly celebrating its 70th anniversary of providing cancer patient assistance in rural NSW. A formal reception will be held at Parliament House in October to mark this significant milestone.
In her President’s Report, Wendy Jackson reflected on a rewarding year of growth for the branch, noting that a change in meeting times had boosted member attendance and engagement.
“Our members, willingly volunteer their time and effort to raise funds to support cancer patients and their families who request support while on their cancer journey. While requests for assistance may be varied, it seems that in the current time, we have an increasing demand for fuel and food.
“The introduction of the Garden Trail to the New England Garden Festival was a wonderful addition with open gardens in each town in Spring and Autumn. A special thank you to John & Barbara Ross, Kerry & Julie Gittoes, Tony Duke and Fiona Smith for opening their gardens. The effort that goes into opening a garden is very much appreciated and the Guyra gardens certainly proved popular, as did the morning teas supplied by our members.
“We continued to host monthly meat raffles at The Royal Hotel, catered for the Eastern Plains bull sale and held regular street stalls and raffles. We also received wonderful donations during the year from the Regional Australia Bank Community Partnerships Program, the Tradie’s Breakfast hosted by Darren and Tania Lennon and Guyra Soccer Club Family Fun Day.
“In February we were able to sponsor half the cost of the Melanoma/Skincare bus at the Guyra Show, promoting the importance of Melanoma awareness and the early detection of skin lesions. This free service is a wonderful asset to our Community. We will also be sponsoring its return in 2026 and we must encourage all community members to take up this opportunity.”
President Wendy Jackson closed her report with heartfelt thanks to all members and supporters.
“As I have said before this branch could not function without the support of a wonderful group of members, who are always willing to help where they can and a local Community who supports us, along with Emma and all at Can Assist Head Office, and allow us to continue to work at a local level, to keep the money we raise stay here to help those who help us.
“There is no other Community Organisation I know who can do that and in 2024 we spent $26 581.12 in client assistance within our local community.”
