06th May 2025

Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce has comfortably retained his seat of New England in the 2025 Australian federal election, defeating six challengers and reaffirming his stronghold over the electorate.
Joyce secured a commanding lead with 52.67% of the first preference vote ensuring an easy path to victory. His nearest competitors were Labor’s Laura Hughes received 20.38% of the first preference vote and One Nation’s Brent Larkham who received 9.87%.
After the distribution of preferences Mr Joyce was a clear winner with 67.14% of the vote ahead of Labor on 32.86. Voting trends in the Guyra district followed a similar pattern. (see table)
New England, has been held by Joyce since 2004 (except for a brief resignation period in 2017). His re-election underscores the Nationals’ continued dominance in rural Australia, even as Labor made major gains in metropolitan and coastal seats nationwide.
Nationally, Labor celebrated a historic second-term victory under Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, while Liberal leader Peter Dutton lost his Queensland seat of Dickson in a stunning upset.
Joyce, in his victory speech, thanked New England voters for their enduring trust:
“It’s a privilege to represent this great region. I will continue fighting for the people of the bush.”
A day after being re-elected Mr Joyce announced he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. He underwent surgery on Monday May 5th and will take a break to recover before getting back to work.
He said he kept his diagnosis private during the election campaign as he “didn’t want it to be a distraction.”
