Rotary Club celebrates eighty years of service

The Rotary Club of Guyra celebrated its eightieth birthday at its changeover dinner at the Blind Chef on Saturday July 18th. The changeover dinner was attended by members and their partners and guests, including special guests, District Governor Di Hall and Past District Governor Ken Hall, and Rotary Community Leader James Reilly from the Rotary Club of Walcha.
The Rotary Club of Guyra was chartered on January 14th, 1946, and the Club held its official charter dinner on May 23rd, 1946 at the Arcadia Theatre in Bradley Street. The Club’s charter was presented to the first Club President Dr A.G. Child by the then District Governor, Rotarian Harold Jones, of Canberra.
In his report to the Club, President Hans Hietbrink extended his thanks to Club members and partners and to friends of Rotary for their efforts in supporting the Club’s main activities during the last year.
During the 2025–26 Rotary year, the Guyra Rotary Club continued its commitment to supporting local organisations, schools and community initiatives through a range of donations.
The Club contributed funding towards important local causes including the Men’s Health Educational Rural Van ($400), the Skin Check Truck at the Guyra Show ($500), end-of-year school presentation prizes ($510), and sponsorship to assist a local student attend the National Youth Science Forum ($1,000).
The Club’s end-of-year Rotary disbursements also reflected its ongoing community support. Donations of $1,000 each were presented to the Northern NSW Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, Guyra Volunteer Rescue Association, Guyra MPS Hospital Auxiliary, Rotary Australia World Community Service District 9660 Disaster Relief and Aid, and the Guyra Central School Farm Vegetable Garden Project.
The club’s main project over the last few years has been the restoration of the Old Scout Hall, now called Rotary Hall. They are continuing improvements and have just completed a grant application for a new kitchen.
District Governor Di Hall officiated at the changeover of by handing the president’s chain over to Wendy Mulligan as Club President for 2026-27. Rotary Community Leader James Reilly presented Wendy with the Rotary International theme banner for 2026 - 27.
President Wendy then introduced the Rotary Board for the coming year and stated that she was looking forward to working with members of the club in continuing Rotary’s contribution to the Guyra community and beyond.
The Guyra Rotary team for 2026-27 is President Wendy Mulligan, Secretary Hans Hietbrink OAM, Treasurer Jenny Cumming, Club Service Martha Weiderman, Community Service Stephen Fellenberg, International Service Eli Imad, Public Image Railene Turner, Vocational Service Neil Fereday and Youth Service Railene Turner.
