The 2026 Guyra Show hosted its first-ever Wool Handling Competition, marking an exciting new addition to the program. With the support of Australian Wool Innovation (AWI), organisers were able to erect a makeshift shearing stand inside the local Pony Club shed to accommodate the event. A total of 45 competitors registered, an outstanding turnout that exceeded expectations.
A highlight of the day was the Local Competition, created specifically to encourage farmers and farmhands from the district to take part without having to compete against professional wool handlers. The event saw local competitors step well outside their comfort zones which was a real credit to each and every one of them.
Local Competition Placings: 1st Mara Grills, 2nd Casey Foster, 3rd Daniel Stace, 4th Kelly Fletcher, 5th Jarod Schaefer
An Encouragement Award was also presented to a young competitor who regularly attends shows but has yet to secure a placing. The award, designed to support and motivate the younger generation, was proudly awarded to Brooklin Park from Western Bathurst.
The competition attracted entrants from as far afield as Chinchilla and Tara in Queensland, along with Boorowa, Dubbo, Bathurst and surrounding districts, in addition to strong local representation from Guyra and the surrounding area.
Competition Results:
Novice Wool Handling Final: 1st Lara Duff, 2nd Molly Temple, 3rd (Local) Bridget Foster, 4th Matilda Thompson
Senior Wool Handling Final: 1st Sarah Temple, 2nd Jacinta Blackburn, 3rd (Local) Tom Lockyer, 4th (Local) Brooke Newberry

Organiser Maare Foster said she was truly overwhelmed by the level of interest and support shown. She extended a heartfelt thank you to all sponsors, whose generosity made the event possible and helped ensure its success.
