Two new defibrillators boost community safety

The Guyra & Community Progress Association (GACPA) is pleased to announce an important new community safety initiative, with the purchase and installation of two new 24-hour, 7-day publicly accessible Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in Guyra’s business precinct.
The initiative reflects GACPA’s ongoing commitment to improving community safety and ensuring lifesaving equipment is readily accessible when it is needed most.
The two new AEDs have been strategically located outside Guyra Pharmacy and Guyra Post Office, providing the community with access to lifesaving equipment around the clock.
GACPA extends a big thank you to everyone who has been involved in making this important community safety initiative possible and for their invaluable contributions.
In particular, GACPA thanks Chris Gaddes (Guyra VRA) for coordinating the project and sharing invaluable knowledge and expertise, and the Guyra Men’s Shed for their generous assistance in installing the AED cabinets.
A special thank you also goes to Vu and Nhu at Guyra Pharmacy, and Kirra and Dave at Guyra Post Office, for supporting this important initiative and allowing an AED to be installed at the external entrance of their businesses, providing the Guyra community with continuous 24/7 access to this vital lifesaving equipment.
To help protect the equipment from vandalism, the AED cabinets are locked and monitored by 24/7 CCTV, with activity recorded if the need arises to retrieve information.
Both public access AEDs have been registered with the GoodSAM Responder system. What does this mean? - When a 000 call is placed for an unresponsive patient, the person logging the call will be provided with an access code for the nearest AED.
The access code for the cabinets is Guyra postcode 2365. An alarm will sound when a cabinet is opened.
Once the AED has been retrieved, that person can begin CPR and use the Defibrillator while waiting for an Ambulance to arrive.
Over the past couple of years, GACPA has also purchased two additional Automated External Defibrillators.
One AED has been installed in the Guyra Showground Hall, while the other is a mobile defibrillator available for use for community and sporting events.
GACPA extends its sincere thanks to Nutrien Ag Solutions Guyra for their generous support of this initiative. The mobile AED is available through a sign-out/sign-in process at Nutrien Ag Solutions Guyra and can be accessed by members of the public for community events, sporting activities and other local gatherings where an AED may be required.
Stay tuned for the date of a free community First Aid and CPR training day, including a sausage sizzle.
This practical session will provide community members with the opportunity to learn how to confidently respond in an emergency, perform CPR and use an AED. It will be a great opportunity for the community to gain valuable lifesaving skills and build confidence in responding when it matters most.
The Progress Association is also currently working on compiling a comprehensive list of AEDs available throughout Guyra and the surrounding villages. If your business, sporting club, community organisation or other facility has an AED, GACPA would love to include it in the community list.
