The St George Illawarra Dragons, with the support of major partner Squadron Energy, recently took to the New England region as part of the club’s ‘The Best You Can Be’ Blitz — a powerful health and wellbeing initiative designed to help young Australians make positive life choices.
Dragon’s legends and community ambassadors Nathan Blacklock, Dylan Egan, and Tom Eisenhuth led the charge, visiting a number of local schools including Guyra Central School, St Mary of the Angels, Black Mountain Public School, and Tingha Public School.
The program, developed in partnership with schools, aims to support teachers in delivering lessons around key areas such as being active, respect and tolerance, inclusiveness, sleep, screen time management, hydration, and nutrition.
Students at St Mary of the Angels were thrilled to welcome the Dragons on Monday September 1st for an afternoon of fun, fitness, and learning. The players ran energetic sessions that promoted teamwork, resilience, and healthy habits, leaving a lasting impression on both students and staff.
“Thank you to the St George Illawarra Dragons, Squadron Energy and the local NRL Game Development officers for taking the time to come to this gorgeous little school to deliver this program and for treating our young people with such positive role models in sport,” Principal Zoe Nugent said. “The number of staff and young people vying for the signed merchandise was certainly a small testament to the impact you all had.”
The excitement continued the next day as Black Mountain Public School hosted the Dragons. Students eagerly took part in footy skills sessions and learned about the importance of resilience and teamwork.
There was plenty of celebration, with families joining in for a Father’s Day morning tea, featuring slider burgers and cake. Students received goody bags, posed for photos with players, and soaked up every moment of this inspiring visit.
“It was so exciting to work with members of the Dragons and to learn new footy skills and positive wellbeing tools to help us later in life,” Rel. Principal Justine Eddy said. “A heartfelt thanks again to our P&C, teachers, and staff who made this such a great day!”
