The snowstorm brought a flurry of visitors to Guyra to enjoy time in the snow. For many, including locals, it was once in a lifetime opportunity to experience such a significant fall.
A major disappointment for the community was the cancellation of the 2025 Guyra Snow Ball. Organisers were initially excited that the forecast snow arrived to coincide with the event, however as the day progressed they were forced to revaluate their plans.
After initially postponing to the following day, the extended road closures left them with no option but to cancel.
It was a major blow for the Guyra and Community Progress Association who had put many months of planning into the event.
The sheer volume of snow and visitors tested local businesses who stepped up to meet demand. A lot of visitors came from north of the border, with Brisbane and the Gold Coast accounting for many of the visitors.
At the Guyra Bowling Club, staff served 270 lunches on Saturday alone. “We were inundated,” a representative said. “Some people became stranded, and around 25 ended up staying the night — sleeping on chairs or the floor. That included 13 university students from Armidale.”
The Royal Hotel also experienced a surge, serving about 280 meals and quickly reaching full accommodation capacity and having to turn people away.
The Blind Chef reported being “non-stop busy” throughout the day. “We had enough stock to manage,” they said, “but when the network went down, it caused problems — most people don’t carry cash these days.”
