$63,000 ramps up access to Community Hall

The level of disability and emergency access at Guyra Community Hall will be ‘ramped up’ thanks to a $62,833 State Government grant to install three new concrete ramps into the building. The new ramps will replace the existing ones, which do not meet current accessibility standards and regulations.
Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall said that while the Guyra Community Hall is a prominent venue for public gatherings, for those with limited mobility it can be a difficult building to get into due to the slope of the existing ramps.
“Using local contractors, Armidale Regional Council will address this issue by demolishing two non-compliant fire exit ramps and constructing three new brick and concrete ramps,” Mr Marshall said.
“Additional lighting will be included at each ramp location along with associated landings, hand railing and tactile markers. The additional ramp will be welcomed as it will provide direct access to the hall’s front entry.
“The building also acts as an Office of Emergency Management Evacuation Centre in times of disaster, and these improvements will make it more functional for evacuees and support staff
“As the hall is utilised for popular events like the Guyra Show and Senior’s Festival, safe and suitable access is vital for preventing injury and ensuring the facility can meet its full potential.”
Armidale Regional Council Mayor Ian Tiley said he was pleased council has been successful in securing the grant which would ensure the Guyra Community Hall was compliant with all access regulations.
“It is great that there will be fewer barriers for the less mobile in our community to use and enjoy the facilities at the Guyra Showground,” Cr Tiley said. “We now we have a lot more work to do and Council is working with the State Government to continually improve our facilities.
“We are focused on ensuring the disabled and less mobile enjoy the same access as every member of our community.
“Council would like to acknowledge Adam for his support of Council’s submission from the start and we look forward to his on-going support in future grant applications.”
