Health Service Fun Day a smashing success

26th Jan 2021

The Family Fun Day held on January 16th was a smashing success. The event was organised by the Guyra Local Health Committee who would like to thank the community members who came out on the beautiful sunny day and enjoyed every aspect of the event.
The day started with the Walkabout Team who offered free haircut and beautician services. The team completed 68 haircuts and 51 beautician services on the day. Chris Yorke and Gemma Williams from Bean Travellin started serving delicious coffee’s and hot chocolates early in the day and did not get a break until 4pm. Aimee Hutton and Wendy Warner ran the virtual reality program and the kids were lined up for this and there was lots of laughter coming from their area. Addam Lewis and his team from Funtastic Family Entertainment and Party Hire brought along there jumping castles, face painting and ball pit - again this well received from kids and adults as it gave the parents a time to sit, relax and enjoy the day while the kids played safely.
Walkabout Barber Brian Dowd brought the attendees together with an inspiring Aboriginal Trauma and Recovery session. This was an amazing session and was great to see so many participants engaged and interested.
Lunch time was busy with all the families lined up for the free sausage sizzle, drinks and icy poles. After lunch we kicked off with the Group 19 NRL footy clinic. Jeremy, Luke and the team ran some fun drills, had some games and gave away some free footballs to the kids. The afternoon continued until the last haircut and beautician appointment was finalised at 3:50pm, and the castles came down at 4:30pm.
All in all in was a great free day for all families, lots of smiles from everyone, laughter and appreciation for our community. The event could not have been so successful without the financial contribution from he Primary Health Network HNECC and Armajun Aboriginal Health Service who so graciously went halves in the cost of the Walkabout Team attending.
Thank you must also go to Bold Trailers and the Bummumbuttock Hay Run team for their food and drink contributions, Kelloggs for their cereal giveaway and Armidale Regional Council for the free Showground hire.
Thank you to all the Guyra Local Health Committee members and volunteers who helped on the day and prior to the event.
The night event then successfully kicked off at the Guyra Royal Hotel with the Charlie Fittler Duo band playing from 7:30pm and yummy finger food platters served from 6:30pm-9pm. The venue was packed to maximum COVID numbers and attendees young and old clearly enjoyed the music.
Thank you to our Guyra Community for attending and participating.
