September 2026 the warmest on record

A warmer than normal start to Spring for Guyra
06th Oct 2026

September 2026 has gone into the record books as Guyra’s warmest September on record, with temperatures well above the long-term average.
Weather records for Guyra date back to 1911, when observations were recorded at the Guyra Post Office. There are some gaps in the early records, before the weather station at Guyra Hospital commenced in 1981.
The average maximum temperature for September was 19.7°C, which was 4.2°C above the long-term average of 15.5°C. This surpassed the previous record of 19.3°C, set in September 2013.
A new record was also set for the highest September temperature, with the mercury reaching 26.2°C on September 20th. The previous record was 26.0°C, recorded on September 26th, 2013.
The unusually warm conditions were attributed to several low-pressure troughs drawing warm air into northern NSW from central Australia, combined with numerous sunny days that increased daytime heating.
Despite the warmth, rainfall remained well below average, with just 30.4mm recorded over five days, compared with the long-term September average of 56mm.
The average minimum temperature was 4.7°C, also above the long-term average of 3.7°C. The coldest morning was -1.2°C on September 17, with eight frosts recorded during the month.
