Guyra woolgrower Thor Burey of ‘Tareela’ has achieved outstanding success, earning Reserve Commercial Champion in the Australian Fleece Competition.
The event is a collaboration between the Australian Sheep Breeders Association (ASBA), the Australian Wool Testing Authority (AWTA), and Nutrien Ag Solutions, and runs alongside the Australian Sheep and Wool Show, which was held in Bendigo from July 18th to 20th, 2025.
Burey’s fleece, which had already won ribbons at the Guyra Show, first claimed Reserve Champion in the Fine Medium class (19.6–20.5 micron) with a high score of 92.40 points. It then went on to be named overall Reserve Champion in the Commercial class.
The Australian Fleece Competition is the largest fully measured fleece competition in the world and in its 24th year attracted 428 entries from 152 exhibitors.
This was Burey’s first time exhibiting at Bendigo, entering a single fleece “just to see how he’d go.” He selected the fleece during shearing for its standout weight, style, and colour, noting that he always keeps an eye out for something special.
The Burey family has been breeding Merinos for over 100 years, currently running a commercial flock of around 3,500 sheep.
The 2025 Australian Fleece Competition was judged by Mark Symes of G Schneider Australia Pty Ltd and David Hart of Nutrien Ag Solutions. Hart praised the overall standard of entries, saying:
“The competition is a terrific showcase for our wool industry and wool growers. The breeding and management skill behind these fleeces is extraordinary.”
Adding to the district’s success, fellow Guyra woolgrower Steve McElroy of ‘Red Hill’ took home Champion in the Extra Ultrafine class, reinforcing the area’s reputation as one of Australia’s top wool-producing districts.
