Youth of the Year regional final held in Guyra

On Saturday February 24th the Guyra Lions Club was the host club for the Regional final of the Youth of the Year quest for Region 4
There were four students participating – Armidale’s Sophia Markham, Inverell’s Indie Robinson-Farago, Glen Innes’ Charlotte McHarg and Guyra’s Trisha Varley. These students were the winners of their respective clubs.
Throughout the morning and early afternoon each of the contestants were presented individually to a panel of three judges. They then took part in the public speaking session which was held at the Guyra Bowling Club, with each contestant having to speak on two impromptu question for two minutes duration.
After this they each spoke for five minutes on a speech that they prepared themselves. Students were supported by members of the four Lions clubs they represented, along with family and guests.
The winner of both sections was Armidale Secondary College student Sophia–Rose Markham who was sponsored by the Lions Club of Armidale Dumaresq INC. She now goes on to represent the region at the district final to be held at Armidale on April 6th.
President of the Lions Club of Guyra Jim Betts said that the student’s presentations on the day were outstanding and he congratulated all involved.
“I would like to express my thanks to the three judges for their contribution to the day - Simon Murray, Wendy George and Julie Walker,” Jim said.
“A great afternoon of entertainment, and after this a great afternoon tea was supplied by the caterers of the Guyra Bowling Club. Best wishes to Sophia in the district final.”
