The Guyra CWA Evening Branch has awarded two $500 scholarships to local Year 11 students, recognising their commitment to further study and future careers in rural Australia.
Lacey Cruickshank and Shilla Remkonkon were presented with their scholarships at the branch’s Annual General Meeting, where members celebrated the opportunity to support two outstanding young women from Guyra Central School.
The branch has offered its annual scholarship program since 2020, helping young women pursue careers in agriculture, rural studies, nursing, teaching and other fields that support rural communities.
The $500 scholarships help ease the financial burden of education and career development, with previous recipients using the funds for course fees, accreditations, study trips and essential learning materials.
Applicants are invited to submit a letter outlining their career aspirations and explaining how the funding would assist them in their studies.
This year, the branch received two outstanding applications and, impressed by the quality of both candidates, decided to award two scholarships rather than one.
Scholarship recipients are also encouraged to attend branch meetings, providing an opportunity to learn more about the CWA and connect with community members. Previous recipients have shared their experiences at local and regional Rural Women’s Day celebrations, helping inspire other young women to pursue their ambitions.
The AGM also marked a change in the branch’s leadership, with Lynda Kagan taking over as President.
Outgoing President Kate Matthews will continue to contribute as Vice President, alongside Jessira Saunders and Jenni Jackson. Wendy Warner has taken on the role of Secretary, while Anne Starr is the new Treasurer.
Members thanked the outgoing executive for their hard work, dedication and commitment to the branch.
With two young women supported through the scholarship program and a new executive team in place, the Guyra CWA Evening Branch is looking forward to another year of community involvement and continuing its support for women and rural communities.
