Giving back, one donation at a time

Rebecca Williams has clocked up 104 blood donations

A high school teacher inspired Rebecca Williams to become a blood donor, and years later she has reached an impressive milestone of 104 blood and plasma donations.
She made her first donations while living in Camden, south-west of Sydney, where she donated 31 times before moving to the Guyra area.
After a break while settling into the region, Rebecca resumed donating when she discovered opportunities to give blood locally. She initially donated in Guyra when services visited the hospital, but now travels to Armidale for her appointments.
Of her 104 donations, Rebecca estimates 65 have been whole blood donations and 39 plasma donations.
While both are important, the donation process differs. Whole blood donations can generally be completed in less than 10 minutes once the needle is in place, while plasma donations take around 40 minutes.
Rebecca said her donations had generally been straightforward, although she recently experienced a minor problem during a plasma donation. Despite the experience, she remains positive about donating and encourages others to consider becoming donors.
“I just give it because I think it’s really good to do,” Rebecca said.
She believes donating is a practical way to help others, with whole blood donations potentially helping three people and plasma being used to produce treatments for a range of medical conditions.
For Rebecca, the refreshments offered after donating are an added bonus. She said that staff at the Armidale donor centre are very friendly and it is always a positive experience.
Her message comes at a critical time for Australian Red Cross Lifeblood, which has reported that blood supplies have fallen by 60 per cent since June, recently reaching their lowest level in almost a decade.
Blood donations help cancer patients and people undergoing surgery, support mothers and babies during childbirth, and save lives following accidents and emergencies. Plasma is also used to make treatments for a range of medical conditions.
Anyone interested in donating can make an appointment through Australian Red Cross Lifeblood by calling 13 14 95, visiting lifeblood.com.au or downloading the Lifeblood app.
