Only Spudettes left to fly the flag

Corey Torrens offloads as he is confronted by the Inverell defence in Sunday’s final.

The Spudettes will fly the Guyra flag on Group 19 grand final day this Sunday after the A grade and under 18s sides bowed out in the preliminary finals.
Inverell exploited some space on the Guyra edge to score two tries in the opening stages, but Guyra scored two of its own when Dylan Sutton caught a Corey Torrens chip kick to cross and then Jayden French charged over from a penalty.
The Hawks then skipped clear with two tries in a row, only for the Spuds to hit back via Alistiar Connors and French’s second.
Only goal kicking separated the teams at halftime with Inverell up 22-18.
However, the early part of the second half decided the game as the Hawks ran in three straight tries to set up a 36-18 lead.
The Spuds came back late with tries to Torrens and Terique Smith, but it was too little too late as the Hawks won 36-28 to book a meeting with Narwan in the grand final.
The Spuds claimed the minor premiership and performed well all season, but didn’t fire when it counted in the finals.
It was a similar story for the under 18s who let Narwan slip to a 14-6 lead in the first half with only a Ryan Jones try against the run of play getting Guyra on the board.
A late penalty goal cut the score to 14-8 at the break and Oscar Atkin beat a tackle and dragged the fullback over the line to level it at 14-all in the second half.
That was as close as the Spuds got as Narwan scored twice to lead 26-14 and even late tries to Ben Reinke and Rave Brazier weren’t enough.
It ended 26-22 and Narwan will face Glen Innes in the decider.
That leaves the Spudettes as Guyra’s only representatives on grand final day at Bellevue Oval in Armidale on Sunday.
They will play in the new leaguetag plate decider against Walcha/Uralla at 9.30am.
The club’s presentation evening is on September 9 from 6.30pm at the bowling club and will feature dinner, entertainment, trophy and jersey presentations and an auction.
Tickets are available for $35 at the Bowling Club and Guyra Fourways, or by contacting the club committee.
