The Super Spuds finished Saturday’s game with only 11 men, but also a 48-24 win over Barraba and two crucial competition points.
It was another try-scoring feast in cold and windy conditions for Billy Youman as he and Rave Brazier combined well early in the game.
Seb Pianko set up the first try with a big line break, but Youman chimed in and helped send Brazier away under the posts.
Brazier then kicked high for Youman to catch and score the next try and the third also saw Brazier and Youman link up as Youman scored his second.
It meant an 18-nil lead for Guyra.
Both teams had a player sin binned and this sparked Barraba to score two tries of its own to cut Guyra’s lead to six, but Youman charged over for his third right on halftime to extend the lead to 24-12 at the break, even though Guyra had Riley Campbell in the bin late in the half.
Tahmani Landsborough sprinted away for Guyra’s first try of the second half and a 30-12 lead.
Barraba had a man sent off and Campbell busted through for a try, before the Bulldogs pulled one back.
Matt Sisson was next to score for the Spuds with a strong run setting up a 42-18 lead.
That’s when the Spuds earnt the ire of the ref with Archie Dowden and Brazier both sent off at the same time.
Barraba scored again, but Youman had one more try in him in the last 10 minutes and the Spuds finished 24 points up.
Youman was a clear man of the match with players’ player and best and fairest honours, Brazier scored two club points and Ben Vidler one.
Earlier in the reserve grade game the Spuds also built an 18-nil lead via two tries to Jayden Field and one to Anthony Dittman.
Barraba scored two of its own to make the halftime score 18-8 but the second half was all Guyra as Field completed his hat-trick, Dittman added a second and Tom Starr also posted a try in a 34-8 win.
Field was players’ player and took two club points, Dittman scored three points and Mark Robinson one.
The leaguetag girls weren’t so fortunate with Barraba proving too slick for the Spudettes.
Lorissa Wilson was Guyra’s only scorer in a 52-4 result.
Irene Pianko was voted players’ player while club points went to Kayla White (3), Paige Vickery (2) and Alli Burey (1).
Guyra heads to Warialda next weekend to take on the Wombats.
