Guyra takes the win over ESC with fresh faces and strong play

24th Jun 2025

The Guyra men’s hockey team returned to the field on Sunday with a full team, and even a sub on the bench, firing on all cylinders in a well-earned win over ESC.
It was fantastic to welcome a new face to the squad, adding fresh energy to the mix, as well as seeing a few familiar players back in action after time away.
Strong work through the centre and sharp pressure up front kept ESC on the back foot, as Guyra controlled the tempo and capitalised when it mattered most.
With little time to rest, the team is already gearing up for a Tuesday night clash with TAS, before enjoying a well-deserved break next weekend.
Momentum is building into the last half of the season, with eyes firmly on the finals.

Women’s Hockey
The women’s 2nd Grade side played Flamingoes in an evenly matched end to end game! With the main battle taking place in the midfield the AMs and DMs had plenty of work to do. Guyra took the lead early but the Flamingoes quickly mounted a counter attack to even the score. In the third quarter Guyra again found the goal box to take the lead. As we all tired, and Flamingoes mounted a frantic attack, Carla Tobin our goalie kept her cool and talked the defence through penalty corners and full Flamingoes’ assault to keep the score at 2-1, a win for the Guyra ladies and relief when the final buzzer went.
3rd Grade was matched against TAS and speed was always going to be our challenge against these younger ladies. Louisa Gordon did not stop in the midfield defending nd running the ball. It was the perfect match for Sonia Rose to return to after injury as she found space in the forwards and Kate Matthew always in the right position was close to scoring. A nil all draw a fitting result for a fast game.

Junior Hockey
Under 8 Geckos played four on four against NEGS. Georgie C and Eddie S played really hard to get the ball forward towards the goal. This allowed both Isla L and Evie C to score. These kids are really improving and try their best each week.
Under 12 Goats returned ready to play a different United team from last week. With strong defence and holding our position being our main game plan, the kids created space and managed to move the ball between each other. This hard work played off when Casey J found the goal after a full team effort to get it there. The crowd cheered as it was a long term goal of Casey’s to score. Although the score line didn’t go our way it was a huge improvement in a week and we couldn’t be prouder.
Under 12 Galahs stepped up to play the skilled United team that the Goats faced last week. With reassurance instilled in Clancy R as our goalie that all seven team mates would help her defend, the game started. Wow did these kids lift with Elka G again finding her strength in the mids and our backs Lachie R and Elsie P helping run the ball out of defence, it was a full team effort. Isla L from Under 8 held her own against the bigger kids and we truly took it to them. And didn’t we cheer when we actually got a goal ourselves. Well done kids on playing your best and giving it your all.
