The Super Spuds went to sleep in the second half against Narwan in Armidale on Saturday and it cost them big.
After forging a 34-12 lead the Spuds watched as the Eels ran in five unanswered tries to win 40-34 and deal Guyra a blow to its semi-final hopes.
The home side scored first before Guyra put together some if its best football to score through Archie Dowden and Tahmani Landsborough to lead 10-6.
A good Corey Torrens kick landed in the arms of Taniela Kite for the next try and Kite charged over for his second soon after to push the lead to 22-6.
Narwan got one back before Rave Brazier scored from a penalty tap to give Guyra a 28-12 lead at halftime. He then scored his second after the break to make it 34-12 and that’s when the game turned ugly for the Spuds.
Narwan got on a roll and Guyra had no response. Four tries to the home side made it 34-all and the fifth put them up 40-34 with only a few minutes to play.
Captain-coach Ben Vidler scored three club points and was voted players’ player, Kite earned two points and Harrison Dowden one, but the loss leaves Guyra in a precarious position with one game to play.
Earlier the Spudettes put in a much-improved performance to roll Narwan 24-6.
The first half was highlighted by Guyra’s goal-line defence, but while holding the Eels out at one end Kiarna Landsborough crossed twice at the other end to give Guyra a 10-nil lead.
Justine Green pounced on a kick the Eels failed to clean up to push the score out to 14-nil early in the second half.
Narwan got on the scoreboard, but two tries to Taneika Dailey ensured the Spudettes got back into the winner’s circle and cement a place in the top four.
Green (3), Danielle Sutton (2) and Katie Ahoy and Jasmine Howarth (1 each) scored club points while Green was also players’ player.
After this weekend’s rep round, Guyra teams head to Uralla for the final round of matches.
