Season kicks off for Junior League

Guyra Junior Rugby League kicked off the 2024 season on the weekend with home games against Inverell Hawks at the Guyra Sporting Complex.
In the under 6s, the Guyra ‘Little Chats’ has a great first game and will only get better as the season progresses. Lots of smiles and excitement to be on the footy field.
The Under 8s had a fun game close game. Tries were stored by Jack Newberry, Jackson Atkin, Lulu Cruickshank, and Tremane Patterson. This team is full of energy and skills. They are going to have a great year.
Junior League Tag team were scoring machines. This team worked well together and crossed the try line 10 times. Awesome work girls.
The Under 10s played a great game against Inverell. Abel Ketley scored three tries, Ashton Hutton one tries. In Hugh Kliendienst’s first game of Rugby League, he was successful with a conversion. The under 10s team in full of talent and will have a fantastic year of footy.
Guyra won the Intermediate League Tag game 44-8. This team of girls all have football skills and enjoy their footy. Oakley Brazier received 3 points and Ava Williams received 1 point from the referee.
The Under 12s went down 18 to 8. A big effort was put in by all the players. Seth Patterson and Hugo Sisson were the try scorers on the day.
Senior League Tag took to the field with energy and smiles. This got them the win 38-4. In their first ever game of league tag Charlie Ward and Clair Bliss got a try. The team played well together and took direction well from their coach. Referee points went to Charlie Ward 2 and Chloe Wilson 1.
In the Under 14s the team gave it all they had but were beaten on the day.  Lincoln Atkin and Beau Wilson were the try scorers and Noah Brennan kicked over the posts for two points. Beau Wilson also received two points from the referee. This team are low in numbers but have a lot of determination.
What a game the 16s was on Saturday. In a close fought game Guyra came out winners 18-12.
Billy Lockyer opened the scoring by busting through and putting the ball down on the try line. This got the boys pumped for the rest of the game. Linjarra West ran the ball well in the middle and also received 3 points from the referee. And on debut Laurence O’Kane scored a try. Harry Purvis had a blinder scoring a try and converting three kicks for goal. Well, done to all the boys who put in 100% to get the win.
The club would like to thank all who helped kick off the season, creating a wonderful day of football in Guyra. Special appreciation goes out to all the coaches for their weekly commitment for training the kids, our volunteers who ensured a safe league day and our first aid officers.
Gratitude to Dean Heagney and Steven Wilson for their efforts in marking the lines and setting up the fields. A big thankyou to Jo Presnell for coordinating the canteen and to Heidi Wilson for managing it on the weekend. Thanks also to the committee that put in the hard work behind the scenes and our Junior referees who excelled in officiating the games. And thank you to the crowd who come and supported our home-grown Super Spuds!!
