Hockey season draws to a close

02nd Sep 2025

The Guyra Under 8s hockey side came out firing against NEGS in a dominant performance from the club’s up and coming stars. They truly knew how to score with passes from Georgie C to Isla L at the top of the circle, who quickly slap sticked it across for Evie C to covert. Possibly our Women’s teams could learn a thing or two from these goal scoring champions!
The Under 12 Goats and Galahs competed in the minor finals to determine their overall placings. On what was truly a cold bleak windy winter’s day the kids got out there and showed true passion and determination for the game of hockey.
How these teams have come together at the end of the season to play a more attacking style of game and having self confidence in their game is a true credit to them.
Special mention to Mia W and Will S who both played goalie and under mounting pressure continued to come off their line to defend the play and communicate with their team. Looking forward to celebrating all our success on Wednesday at our final training for the year. End of season result Galahs 8th and Goats 10th.
The women’s 2nd grade hockey side played on Sunday, needing a win to progress to the top four teams and compete in the finals. Annabelle L was quick to convert a goal to put Guyra in the lead in the first quarter.
What followed was a series of colourful cards for a range of offences which saw numerous players get a well-earned rest in the chair. One serial offender was cheering thou as she flew under the radar and didn’t see a card all match.
Albies managed to equalise from a good cross to their post. Trying to shake things up, our backs decided to run as forwards, but we just couldn’t get the advantage needed in the circle to put us back in the lead.
The final bell signalled the end of our season but the true winners are all the ladies who play each week, have fun together and can even laugh at our misdemeanours.
The 3rd grade side has spent the last three weeks playing all the purple and pink Flamingo’s teams. This was by far the most enjoyable match as we faced like-minded ladies who just enjoyed playing good hockey. With only nine on the field the Guyra ladies utilised the space well and really worked the ball as a team to move the ball around.
Flamingo’s were first to score although this didn’t faze the ladies who busily discussed dog breeding at half time instead of tactics and game planning!
With plenty of opportunities for Guyra to equalise, the score remained at 1-nil. Even thou a defeat, the game was played with such spirit that all Guyra ladies were quick to discuss their return for the 2026 season.
Finally a huge thank you to all our sponsors (White Bull, Costa, Grazag, Ray White Guyra, Kelso Services, Glenavon Angus, Mirama Merino, Trent Mendes Earthmoving, Top of the Range Shearing, New England Pet Food, Hanlons, New England Toyota and First Flush Plumbing) who make it possible for our club to compete as a professional competitive club. Good luck to our Men’s team who commence in the Final Series for B grade this weekend.
