Spuds give Inverell a scare in first outing

14th Apr 2026

Guyra did not have the best start to the 2026 Group 19 season on Saturday on the scoreboard, but the Old Boys Day crowd made it a big success off the field.
The crowd greeted the 2006 first grade premiership side as it celebrated its 20-year reunion and also to see Guyra field its first reserve grade team in 10 years.
The A grade was the main event and saw the Super Spuds give reigning champions Inverell a scare before going down 34-24.
It was 12-all at halftime after Samuel Briggs-Andrews and Robert Sisson scored tries that cancelled out Inverell’s 12-nil lead.
The Hawks re-established that lead with two tries to make it 24-12 early in the second half as the wind played havoc with the kick-offs and general play kicking.
Billy Youman and captain-coach Ben Vidler showed strength to run in two tries to get Guyra back level, but Inverell finished stronger with two more tries.
Archie Dowden not only booted four from four conversions, he was also named players’ player and took home the three club points.
Tommy Ryan scored two points in a strong official Spuds debut and Sisson picked up one point.
In the first game of the day, the Spudettes found the going tough as Inverell ran away to a 40-4 success.
Kayla White scored Guyra’s only try and also received two best and fairest points.
Paige Vickery scored three points and Alli Burey one, while Taylor Waters was voted players’ player.
The reserve grade clash saw Inverell lead 4-nil before Blake Phillips dived over in the corner for Guyra to level at 4-all.
Two tries before halftime gave the Hawks a very handy 16-4 lead, but Guyra scored all the second half points as Corbi Byers and Brendon Williams crossed on opposite sides of the field.
It wasn’t enough though as Inverell held on to win 16-14.
Anthony Dittman was players’ player and scored three club points, Matt Simpson took two and Tom Starr one.
This Sunday the Spuds travel to Glen Innes for the first away games of the year.
