Guyra’s unbeaten run at home in the A grade came to an end on Sunday, but not before the Spuds gave the high-flying Inverell Hawks a big scare.
The day began with the Spudettes winning a thriller in the leaguetag after trading tries with Inverell throughout.
After the Hawks scored first, Guyra hit back via a Justine Green try and then went ahead 10-4 when Kiarna Landsborough crossed.
It was 10-all at halftime but Taneika Dailey started and finished a good try after the break to put Guyra up 14-10.
Inverell took a 16-14 lead with not long on the clock, but the Spudettes stole it late when Dailey scored her second and Charlie Ward slotted the goal for a 20-16 victory.
Green was players’ player on her debut while club points went to Danielle Sutton (3), Ward (2) and Sophie Mitchell (1).
Inverell also scored first in the A grade before Bailey Wilson charged over for Guyra’s first try for a 6-4 lead.
Inverell scored next but the Spuds went back front when Cormack Hume was first to an awkwardly bouncing kick to score and make it 12-10 and stretched the lead to 18-10 when Hume went over for his second soon after.
The Hawks dominated the rest of the half and went into the break up 26-18 but the Spuds hit back early in the second period when Harrison Dowden scored.
Even when Inverell went 32-22 in front, the Guyra challenge was not over.
Hume scored his third of the day, again off a bouncing kick, and the margin was only four points.
Unfortunately for the home side, the Hawks finished in a flurry with two tries in the last three minutes flattering them on the scoreboard, which read 42-28 at the end.
Hume was players’ player and took the three points, while Ock Atkin polled two and Angus Brazier one.
Guyra’s next outing is in two weeks at Moree.
