Grand final win for cricketers

28th Mar 2023

The final games of the 2023 cricket season were played on the weekend under threatening skies.
Guyra’s Under 13 side were lucky to get their game played early, and it was a worthy grand final with a nailbiting finish.
Guyra won the toss and decided to bowl. Their bowlers struck early and had Ex Services 2-4, finishing the innings on 6/81 off 20 overs.
Wicket takers were Peyton Heagney 2/11, Thomas Brazier 1/8, Nayte Foster 1/4 and Jack Campbell 1/5.Peyton Heagney and Hugo Brazier combined for a runout.
In reply, Guyra fell just short to finish the day at 7/80. Best with the bat were Mavric Foster 12, Hugo Brazier 9, Nayte Foster 10 and Tommy Mitchell 13 (ret.)
Run outs probably cost Guyra the game with three dismissals for failing to make the crease.
In the senior ranks, Guyra’s first grade side were up against City/UNE in what was a replay of the 2022 decider.
Guyra won the toss and elected to bat, dodging the rain to finish on 7/115.
Top scoring for Guyra were Grant Ryan 16, Joey Ryan 25, Michael Purvis 23 (n.o.)
The game came down to the wire with City/UNE all out for 112, with Guyra getting the final wicket in the 39th over.
This was sweet revenge for Guyra, reversing the result from last year to take the premiership title.
Wicket takers were Jake Ellis 2/24, Tyson Burey 1/5, Heath Dowsett 1/17, Joey Ryan 4/16 and Charlie White 1/14, and a runout by Tyson Burey.
In the third grade decider, the weather proved to be the winner on the day. The match was abandoned due to rain after 15 overs with Guyra on 3/43.
Guyra and their opponents Walcha/Uralla will share the honours for 2023.
